Max Bill kontra Jan Tschichold: Der Typografiestreit der Moderne, by Hans Rudolf Bosshard
Stephen Coles of Typographica.org was kind enough to publish a substantial review essay I wrote on Hans Rudolf Bosshard’s discussion of the ‘clash of the typographic moderns’, Max Bill and Jan Tschichold, which took place in the pages of the Schweizer Graphische Mitteilungen in 1946.
You can find translated versions of Bill’s and Tschichold’s texts in Typography Papers 4, along with a solid essay on the debate by Christopher Burke and Robin Kinross. The issue is long since sold out and out of print, but some university libraries will have copies. Here’s a link to an index of the issue’s contents on Hyphen Press’s website.
