Schrofer screenprint (2018)

Jurriaan Schrofer exhibited a set of screenprints in 1972, during a period where he was beginning to experiment with both letterforms and decoration in his design—not just Jacques Bertin’s work on the semiotics of information design, but also Ernst Gombrich’s work on ornament, coming to occupy his imagination.

I wrote code to generate randomly the kinds of combinations of arcs and angles he used—above, in clusters of four arcs or angles at random; below, using all arcs, again as in his original set, and then strictly alternating between arcs and angles.
Made with Python in DrawBot.
